Information Technology Degree Programs

The Information Technology Association of America has defined Information Technology (IT) as "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware." Information technology involves a lot of processes, including the capability to electronically input, process, store, output, transmit, and receive data and information, including text, graphics, sound, and video, as well as the ability to control machines of all kinds electronically.

Essentially, without Information Technology, much of what we do today could not happen. In fact, information technology professionals work behind the scenes to make things happen. They design, build and implement technology solutions that drive the economy, that solve problems that deliver the right information to the people who need it.

IT professionals wear many hats and go by different names, depending on their area of expertise—engineer, website administrator, and network administrator, to name a few. The range of IT jobs is vast. And the skills needed to set up an office network—install the cables, configure the computers, and keep them running—are quite different from those required to set up and administer a national or global wide area network.

But no matter what job they do, all IT professionals focus on improving the usability and efficiency of technology systems and processes to meet business goals. The IT professional’s goal is a smoothly functioning computer network—free of faults, glitches, and interruptions—that provides an effective flow of information so the company can keep on improving its work processes, customer retention and acquisition, and other aspects of its business.
